Another option is a wireless hard drive. The benefit of using this is that you can put it anywhere in your house and everyone can use it.

A hard drive’s speed is measures in RPM(revolutions per minute) a fast drive rotates at 7,200 RPM. There are also 5,200 RPM drives on the market. They are fairly fast, but more reasonably priced.

The maximum size of an external hard drive is currently 2 TB(Terabytes). The size that you get really depends on your needs. Personally I have a laptop and a computer at home. They are connected with a LAN network and files from both devices are backed up to my 500 Gig external hard drive on a weekly basis.
