Hi all my name is Kerron, and basically I just wanted to share my opinion on why I think portable external hard drives are a very valuable device to have around. We all have massive amounts of data stored on our internal hard drives whether it’s PC or Mac, and if your like me, the thought of losing all my music collections, videos, photos and important software can be a terrifying experience.

Well I was fortunate (not really) to have one of those so called "Blue Screen Of Death" moments where apparently some sort of system file got corrupted, or so Windows said and for nothing it would boot into my profile. Needless to say, I have never done any sort of backing up in my life ( when I first heard the term "back up" I thought it to be a very difficult and tedious process that only people with technical knowledge could perform) which is why i never really bothered with the task.

Luckily for me I was able to take my PC to the local computer repair shop, and after a quick diagnostic ( like literally quick, the guy powered it on took one look at the error and said he’s gonna have to reformat my hard drive), he then asked if I had previously backed up my data at any point prior to the crash. I kept my cool, and with a calm, relaxed voiced I replied NO. After a very cheeky smile, he told me not to worry he would be able to retrieve my data and "back it up" to a portable external hard drive so he can restore it later. That term external hard drive had sparked my interest.

I was a bit curious to find out how it worked and was getting ready for some long tech jargon (that i would probably have to go look up after agreeing with what he said). Instead he brought out this little back box no bigger than the palm of my hand which isn’t very big, and explained all that all he needed to do was plug it into the USB port and after the windows recognises it automatically, it’s as easy as copy and pasting what ever type of data I like across to the external drive. Now the process to retrieve my data was a more complicated one (which I didn’t quite fully understand) so I won’t get into that. But I was sold on the idea of this little black box that is capable of holding my most valuable data, and the process of " back up" was as simple as copy and paste.

After getting my PC back up an working (big smile), I decided to invest in one of those portable external hard drive (there were also larger sized ones that you can place on your desk, but I like the idea of portable data) for keeping my data safe. I was actually surprised that it was not as expensive as I thought. I paid under $100 USD for my Seagate 250gb portable external hard drive, that was actually more storage space than my internal hard drive (kind of old PC). All I have to do is plug in the external drive into the USB port and it’s as simple as drag and drop my data. Now I rest comfortably knowing my most precious data is safe from unexpected system crashed, and the best of all what i really like about these portable external hard drives are the fact that you can take them with you anywhere and they only weight a few ounces, I’ve seen cell phones weigh more than them.

I highly recommend investing in a portable external hard drive if you have never backed up your data or need more storage space for backing up data, and also if you travel alot and need access to your personal data on the go. Feel free to visit my blog where I discuss certain factors to look at when purchasing a portable external hard drive.

What is a 1TB Hard Drive Good For?

Hard drives in the computer store data and let you get it back whenever you need.A 1TB hard drive is a special variation of this device, it lets you store 1 Terabytes of data, or 1000 gigabytes.

Hard drives have been using a magnetic principal to store data for the last few decades. It involves a metal disc coated in a layer that holds magnetic status set by the head hovering just a whisker above the surfaces.

These heads are able to determine the bits passing under them while the disks spin away at 4200, 5400 or 7200 rounds per minute in conventional hard disk. This bit is interpreted by internal electronics and then passed on to the motherboard where the operating system can catch it and finally find out what file it is and where it is supposed to go.

A terabyte is a measurement unit for data stored. This is 1000 Gigabytes or to make it more tangible, you would be able to store 220 one sided DVDs on a HDD this big. That’s the capacity of 125 8GB iPods, or equal to 225,000 good quality mp3 tracks. It is enough for most people to store all their albums, movies and documents at home. And if they ever run out of it, there are 1.5TB drives and another 1TB hard disk drive is not very expensive either.

There are two kinds of connectors you should be aware of when you choose a hard disk. The first and oldest connector is the PATA. You will be able to tell it, because it’s about 2 inches wide and has 80 wires running in it. It’s being phased out in favor of the SATA. The sate connector and cable is about the same as a USB connector and cable. It’s faster, more reliable and the controller electronics is more sophisticated. Most modern motherboards and hard disks come with this, if you have the connector, get SATA hard disk drives.

Sata hard disks are faster in data transfer and the manufacturing prices of cables are also lower for obvious reasons. A 80 copper wire cable requires more material while SATA only uses 7 wires.

A 1TB hard drive is slowly becoming factory standard for even OEM computers, it’s the new common capacity. If you’re after a new model because your old HDD died, or simply ran out of capacity, refer to forum threads and reviews before purchasing one. You are going to save yourself some frustration.

Why to Look for Disc Spanning When Choosing Your Home/Office Backup Software

Fifteen years ago, increasing numbers of people had computers, but their important data consisted of small documents and perhaps a few basic programs. To backup all they needed was several blank floppy discs and a compression utility. Even a "power user" might find themselves with two megabytes of data to preserve.

As we collect more and more important data, our backup needs are growing. Like in the past, we still have easily compressible documents, but bulky multimedia files as well, like videos, graphics and music. Doubtless this kind of data needs protection – the first pictures or a home video of a newborn baby might exist only as binary code on a hard drive. If your hard drive fails and there’s no backup – unlike with traditional film – those digital memories could be lost forever. Nowdays it’s common to find full system backups of hundreds of thousands files, ranging between 30 and 120 gigabytes (GB). The problem is where to store this data.

There are a number of media types available to most computer users for their backup purposes. Many businesses use magneto-optical or large-capacity tape drives for their daily and weekly backups. With very high capacities, these drives are technically impressive, but the media is usually very expensive. The common backup media for home and office includes CD/DVD discs, dedicated internal drives and external hard drives that exist in capacities over one terabyte (1TB) with fast Firewire 800 and USB 2.0 interfaces. Companies like Iomega found little home market success with smaller drives such as the Jaz (1-2GB) and Rev (35GB) series.

Where cost is a priority, a better option for home and small business users is often disc spanning, where cheap blank media can be used to the same effect as a tape or a dedicated drive. The benefits in cost of disc spanning are easily measurable. For a 20GB backup set the cost per gigabyte (CPG) will be as cheap as 33c for a DVD-RW disc, compared with up to $6 per gigabyte for an external hard drive of comparable size. Even for a larger backup of 250GB the optimal cost per gigabyte for external hard drive will be around 80 cents, still twice more than for a DVD-RW disc. A large internal drive can have a similar cost to a DVD-RW disc, but unless you make enough backup sets to fill it, your excess disk space is effectively wasted. In this sense, disc spanning is an attractive and economical option.

This table summarizes the cost per gigabyte for different types of storage media and various backup sets: http://www.softwaretalks.com/files/cpg.gif.

Moreover, disc spanning is simple. All you need is to choose the files, obtain some blank discs, and a good backup program will inform you of the total size, and how many media units are required for backup. Since a CD/DVD writing drive became a part of a basic PC configuration, you don’t need to fiddle around switching external devices, adding hard discs, installing drivers and playing other "hardware games". The ability to store your backups on discs offsite is also a major advantage.

Not only is disc spanning a cheap, simple and flexible backup method, but it is also one of the most reliable backup forms today. Modern optical storage media has a shelf life of at least 30 years and some manufacturers even offer 100 year guarantees. Compared to an average lifespan of 5-7 years for hard drives and up to 20 years for a magnetic tape, optical discs are very long-lived. Disc spanning makes it possible that our backups will outlive ourselves.

Finally, this backup method continues to gain popularity as technology develops. Next-generation forms of blue-laser discs using organic dyes, such as the Sony Blu-ray format (between 23GB and 54GB) and Toshiba’s HD-DVD, will further reduce the cost of removable media, meaning that inexpensive and simple backups are within the reach of everyone.

Top 5 External Hard Drives

This article steps through some of the most popular external hard drives that money can buy today. We’re talking about some costly models – but they are very much worth the money if you can justify the need for the extra storage space.

SmartDisk FireLite

This little baby is a 60GB wonder that runs on a USB 2,0 interface and is compatible on both PC and Mac platforms. Excellent value for money and one of the hottest sellers out there.

LaCie 160 GB

Want some serious space? Look at the LaCie 160GB herd drive that comes with a Fiewire interface. This drive will ensure that you are storing all your data in a safe and secure place for a long, long time.

LaCie 250 GB

This guy is a cousin of the LaCie 160 GB hard drive. Ok, so nobody will really need a 250GB external hard drive. But for video files and movies, this drive is the one to get.

Western Digital 80 GB

A nicely priced model, the Western Digital drive stores 80GB of data and supports a speedy USB 2.0 interface. Real value for money and certainly one for the home user to consider.

Iomega 160 GB

Iomega also produces external hard drives (remember they used to produce the defunct zip disk?) Well, their brand of external hard drives are top notch. And they look really good too. Worth considering if you’re in the market for one.

Conclusion

That’s a quick round up of the external hard drives which are popular in the market today. If you need a good drive for home use, I’d recommend the Iomega 160 GB hard drive. If you’re a professional looking for serious backup, then the LaCie 250 GB hard drive is a good choice. Good luck and happy shopping!

If you need to replace your hard drive then read on. In this article we are going to cover a couple of points that provide a quick overview and some really useful tips.

When you think about it after your Central Processing Unit (CPU) and memory it is probably true to say that your computer hard disk is probably one of the most important parts in your personal computer or laptop. Given your hard drives importance it vital that when buying a replacement that you do the job properly.

More Capacity – A lot of people upgrade simply because they have used up the capacity on their existing disk. This type of upgrade is certainly a lot cheaper than buying a new PC.

There are two basic types of hard drive, internal and external that you can use.

Internal – As the name suggests an internal drive goes inside your machine. They are quite to connect up it is just simply a case of unplugging the existing drive and switching with the new one. Popular makes are Seagate and Western Digital.

External – I always think it is worth considering investing in an external hard drive as a solution to your memory problems. This is because of the ease of installation. You see instead of removing your existing drive and replacing with a new one you can purchase a cheap external hard drive which can literally be plugged into your computer via a USB port in a matter of seconds.

Different Features of Simpletech External Hard Drive

A Simpletech external hard drive has a variety of features and has an excellent software support. It can be connected easily with the help of a USB drive and in future, it could be connected with a combination of USB and Fire Wire. You are provided online storage facility which is absent in other such drives. There are other models which are expensive than this product and yet, do not provide the features which are provided by a Simpletech external hard drive.

A Simpletech external hard drive provides a storage capacity of 500GB and is priced at $200. It has a fast data transfer rate and other models in the same price range are much slower than this. Further, its elegant body is designed by the designer of popular automobile model, Ferrari. Thus, you can be assured of best quality design. You can get your drive in one of the various colors which are available in the market.

You need not install any software for installing your drive. You just need to connect the USB cable of your drive to your computer and it would be ready at your disposal. You can have various capacities in this drive, starting from 160 GB up to 1 TB! The back up software can be installed at the time of first use by using the set up application which is provided in the drive.

The back up application is quite easy to use and very helpful at the same time. Various useful files or folders can be stored at some convenient location such as a CD or a DVD. You can even schedule the back up operation. However, you must take note of the fact that you can back up only the files and folders using this drive. You can not make a bootable drive using this. Along with all such features, you will also be given free online storage capacity of 2GB at Myfabric.com.

Since creating the mini laptop or netbook category over a year ago with the Eee line, Asus has not stopped creating models of netbooks that veer away from the plastic look of the existing Eee line. This isn’t really surprising. With competition from Acer, HP, MSI, Dell, Medion, Toshiba, and Lenovo, Asus needs to outdo all others to be in the lead.

Here’s a rundown of new releases from Asus:

Eee PC S101

This netbook veers away from the cheap plastic look by using a thin metallic casing. Weighing in at just 2.2 lbs, it’s one of the slimmest notebooks being sold these days. It’s stylish metallic frame comes in three elegant colors: metallic brown, champagne, and graphite.

Aside from its standard Intel Atom-based specs, the S101 also has a 4-in-1 card reader and built-in high quality stereo speakers. For its sleek look, the S101 is priced very close to $700.

Eee PC 1002HA

This netbook was released in November 2008. It’s a standard 10-inch netbook and is powered by an Intel Atom N270 central processing unit, 1GB of RAM, 160GB hard drive, and Windows XP. The only difference with this mini laptop is that it is packed in a gray, brushed-aluminum chassis. It’s may not be as thin as the Asus S101, but it is just about as stylish, and at 2.65 pounds, it actually just a few ounces heavier. The price of the 1002HA is at the standard price of $499.

ASUS N10J

The Aus N10J would have been like any other netbook (with the standard Intel Atom N270 CPU, 1GB of RAM, and Windows XP) except that this mini laptop has an Nvidia GeForce 9300 graphics card, so users can actually play games on it. Hardcore gamers, however, better keep their expectations at a minimum with this mini laptop model. Gamers of the multi-player Unreal Tournament 3 (UT3) need to set the resolution at 800×600 and keep the detail level at medium. For the add-on gaming experience, this netbook is priced higher than its cousins in the basic Eee line.

Nowadays, with the increase in the amount of music, videos and pictures that can easily be downloaded with just a click, everyone’s main problem is storage space. Most computers come with a sufficient amount of memory for running and installing applications. However, enough is never enough. All of us need more space to store our data. Luckily, external portable hard drives were invented. External hard drives can be used for all intents and purposes.

What to Save on External Hard Drive? (What to Use it For)

First, it can be used to increase the memory capacity of your internal drive by freeing the space. Instead of clogging up your internal memory with a ton of files, you can transfer it to your external portable hard drive. This will allow your computer to run faster and perform better.

Second, it can be attached on recording devices to increase their memory capacity. This will allow you to be the master of recording devices. Record hundreds of hours of your favorite TV shows or movies and watch them at the time most convenient for you.

Third, you can use it to back-up important files in your computer. There are a lot of things that can happen that might cause your computer to crash and thus make you lose important data. If you properly back up your data then you wouldn’t have to worry about this. Also, you can save files that need to be archived in external drives.

Fourth, you can use it to safely and conveniently transfer files from one place to another. With an external portable hard drive, you won’t have to bring a laptop when transferring large files from one computer to another. It also eliminates the need to repeatedly connect an external storage device because of its large capacity.

Lastly, with the technology out there, you can use the external portable hard device for virtually anything. You decide on what to save on your external portable hard drive. It can be documents, pictures, music or videos. It all depends on your needs and on your external hard drive’s storage capacity.

The Strong External Drive – LaCie Rugged All-Terrain

Indecency often happens, and we certainly do not like this. We often accidentally drop stuffs while carrying it or make it fall from the table and it can be a serious problem on some cases, for example an external drive which saves your work or your final exam files accidentally fallen from your hand and ruined, the worst consequence is data lost. You can be careful to prevent it, but it does not guarantee your carelessness will not happen again.

Technology experts always understand our problem. Therefore they created external drive which has a robust structure and design. Among of those strong external hard disks, one of them is LaCie Rugged All-Terrain Hard Drive.

Its design reminds me to mp3 player. LaCie Rugged All-Terrain Hard Drive is designed to survive against extreme condition. Maybe at the first sight you think it’s heavy because of its solid shell but actually this thing is lighter than you think, only 250 gram, measuring at 9 cm wide, 14.5 cm long, and 2.5 cm in height.

This device is very tough, has a shock-resistant rubber sleeve for muffled impact effect, anti scratch protective aluminum shell as shield which protects the hard drive, and internal anti-shock rubber bumpers as hard drive foundations which gives shock resistance.

It is easily carried, and you do not need to be afraid if it encounters extreme conditions such as accidentally falling from your hand, your desk, etc. It also gives safety for your data while being carried on traveling or vacations. It never fails handling your data. LaCie Rugged All-Terrain is available in 120GB, 250GB, 320GB, 320GB-7200 rpm (only this type which has 7200 rpm spindle speed), and 500GB.

Its type of 320 GB-7200 rpm has a better spindle speed than the others. Its 320 GB capacity is able to store up to one million images and more than 200 hours video recording, 7200 rpm spindle speed for data access speed which reduces your waiting time, FireWire 800 & 400 and USB 2.0 interfaced for fast connectivity. With bus-powered installed in it you do not need external power supply to run it, hot plug on and play, and so easily to run on any computers / laptops.

Pros
It is one of the external drives which have a solid structure and difficult to be damaged. Its protective aluminum shell and shock-resistant rubber sleeve makes hard drive well protected.

Cons
Has an ordinary design of external disk, and its orange color on shock-resistant rubber sleeve does not match with silver on protective aluminum shell.
