The Benefits of Reading a Good External Hard Drive Review

Backing up your files regularly is important to avoid losing your most valuable data in the event of a computer disaster such as accidental file or software deletion or virus attacks. The portable hard disk has always offered the best solution in making your files safe and secure. On this line, we will discuss the advantages and usual solutions in this quick external hard drive review.

In case of computer failure, you are ensured to be able to save your data from erasure by backing up onto an external hard disk and this will be helped a lot in case your computer internal hard drive is also already clogged up with so many files that it also results in a very slow performance of your pc or laptop.

Over the years, there have been some real advances in portable hard drive technology. They have become much smaller compared to previous versions but they now offer a much bigger storage space and all for an affordable cost.

Most external hard disk offer easy back-up solutions and simple plug and play features. Just by plugging your media storage in to the USB port, you are ready to copy your files from your computer to the portable drive.

By reading any external hard drive review by other personal computer users, you will quickly find that the most popular companies known to offer the best external drives are Western Digital, Seagate and Iomega and they all have many different editions of storage media for specific uses by personal desktop users and small businesses alike.

Portable external drive size capacities range from 250 GB (gigabyte) to 8 TB (terabytes). This can differ depending on the brand and usage. With this big data storage there is a lot of space available for daily back-ups of important files, but of course there is still a lot more space for other uses too.

Mostly, common portable drives support USB connections to back-up your computer files. Advanced and more expensive external drives are capable of supporting FireWire and eSata connections for faster transfer rates and seamless connections.

Other portable disks may need to be powered by plugging them in to an external electric power source. This is ideal for laptop users who want to avoid losing the power of their laptop battery because of extensive use of electricity by the external portable drives.

Besides offering an extra storage facility, other portable disks have pre-installed software that helps you back-up your files instantly or with minimal user intervention. You can select which file to back-up or even back up your entire computer hard drive. There are many other options that you should consider and any good external hard drive review should be able to help with these additional features.

Other external drives can be use for networking purposes allowing you to access your files anywhere with media that supports NAS (network-attached storage). Some of these support securing your files using an encrypted password access system and data encryption for limiting access to your confidential data.

Modern versions of portable drives are lightweight, and slim in size, so they are ideal for travel and they occupy very little space thus allowing you to carry it anywhere. This ensures you have an extra and large storage space for data, files and other media in case your laptop fails somewhere along the road.

Toshiba 500GB Portable External Hard Drive Review

Toshiba’s 500 GB Portable Hard drive is excellent for data storage. This simply named external storage device is perfect for users who don’t need high end features and lightning fast speed and just need data backup. It can be connected to the computer very easily by using an USB wire. It is very easy to use and user-friendly.

DESIGN: It measures only 5 x 3.2 x 0.7 cms and weighs only 6 ounces. The design is sleek and classy; the blue stripes look great on the black surface. This external hard drive makes quite a fashion statement. Also, being lightweight and small, it can fit into the user’s shirt, jeans or jacket pockets easily and can be carried around without much trouble. But the drive has a plastic body, which gives a cheap feel. Also, the drive surface flexes under pressure, which suggests that it isn’t hardy enough for a device that is supposed to store all of the user’s important data. The device has rubber bumpers on the bottom though, which make it shock resistant.

PERFORMANCE: The data writing speed is about 15.8 MBps. This is less than the usual average writing speed of other external drives, which is about 17.6 MBps. But, at about 26.2 MBps, the reading speed is extremely fast.

EXTRAS: NTI’s shadow software is pre-installed in this external drive. This is extremely useful and easy to use software that has the option of saving up to 9 versions of a document. This feature comes in handy if the user suddenly needs to view early drafts of one of his documents. Also, Auto backup can be organized for particular time slots and particular days. But, this product doesn’t come with any encryption software to hide sensitive data and online data storage facility isn’t provided as well. PRICE AND WARRANTY: The price is approximately US $149 and this product comes with a limited warranty of 3 years.

This product is good for casual users but isn’t that great for official purposes or storage of sensitive data. Also, it is a bit over priced for its limited features and low data writing speed; more efficient hard drives of other brands are available at about the same price. The data reading speed is superb though. Overall, this is a pretty good external hard drive that serves its basic purpose of data storage well, but doesn’t provide any other great features.

1TB Hard Drive – The 3 Top External Harddrives For the Year 2010

If you are hunting to purchase a quality external 1tb hard drive soon, then check out this brand new review of the three top rated external hard disks for 2010!

The three bestselling hard disks I am going to be looking at include the 1TB Western Digital WD Elements, the 1TB Iomega Prestige and the 1TB LaCie d2 Quadra Hard Disk. Let’s get started?

1) Western Digital WD Elements 1 TB SB 2. Desktop External Hard Drive

This particular Western Digital Hard Drive offers quite a bit of pros and not enough cons worth considering. This disc drive is a terrific way to expand the storage of your Mac or your PC by simply plugging it into a usb port. This high speed disc drive has plug and play storage and a superb durable metal case that is both resilient and also compact, which makes it ideal for travelling.

You can back up your files, songs movies and photos in hardly any time whatsoever. The sole ‘con’ is that there’s no software and no manual added to your purchase, but it turns out that you do not actually have to have these anyway.

2) Iomega Prestige 1 TB USB 2. Desktop External Hard Drive

High quality-hunters on a budget will adore this Iomega Hard Drive. This is a classy aluminum drive that has a stand incorporated. It is possible to backup all of your data and simultaneously enjoy Trend Micro Internet Security which is internet-downloadable software which comes incorporated with a purchase of this disk drive.

There is a 3 year warranty should you register this product and from the extended warranty alone, you can tell that the quality of the product is quite hard to equal. This is a plug and play simple hard drive answer that will come in a compact size that you could bring along with you wherever you’re going.

3) LaCie d2 Quadra Hard Disk 1 TB USB 2./FireWire 400/800/eSATA Desktop External Hard Drive

This LaCie Hard disk (Aluminum) features a ridged exterior developed by famous designer Neil Poulton that improves the cooling efficiency of the hard disk. This is a professional hard disk that provides you with everything you are looking for in a hard disk and much more, like a six pin Firewire 400 port, a highspeed USB port that’s works with a USB 1.1, an eSATA 3 Gbit port, two FireWire 800 ports which are 2 pin along with a d2 Quadra which includes top speed multimedia programs that have widespread connectivity.

This particular small product is able to hold millions of photos, seventy hrs of DV video or nearly 400,000 tracks. The cons on this item is that it’s more costly than most other hardrives. Additionally, it operates extremely silently, which can make a person question if it’s plugged in or not. However, there’s a attractive blue light indication that tells you that it’s, in fact, up and running.

Well, there we have it! For more info about the 1tb hard drive and info on where to purchase them, go to 1TBHardDrive.org now!

A Buyer’s Guide to External Hard Drives

External drives provide a convenient and portable way to back up your computer’s internal drive, or to store data you need to be able to transport from one place to another. With prices for external hard drives falling, they’re a surprisingly affordable option, as well.

External drives come in a variety of sizes and types, as well as several different brands. It might be a good idea to research individual brands before making a final purchase, as some have proven more reliable than others in long-term use.

Uses for External Hard Drives

Hard drives are handy for backing up your hard drive contents. Most external drives can hold the entire contents of an average hard drive, giving you an easily accessible storage area for vital files.

If you work with large files on a regular basis, such as complex graphics or video, you might have trouble keeping enough space on your hard drive to work with. Using external drives, you can place these large files off your main hard drive, but still have easy access through USB or firewire connections. In general, external drives aren’t as fast as your internal drive, but in most cases the transfer speed will be fast enough for easy access from your main computer. External hard drives with firewire connections will be faster than those with USB connections.

If you use external drives with an independent power source for file backup, be sure to protect them from power surges in order to prevent data loss.

Choosing an External Hard Drive

Before purchasing an external hard drive, consider your personal needs. Some drives require a power source, and so are less portable than those which don’t. However, external hard drives that don’t require a power source often have less available storage space than those that run on their own power. If you need a large amount of space, such as a Terabyte or more, you’ll probably need to buy a drive with an independent power source. If you want a small, compact drive you can carry easily from place to place, look for a drive that pulls power from your computer rather than having to be plugged into an outlet.

Different brands have different software requirements, as well. While many hard drives are plug and play, others require installation of drivers. If you don’t want to have to add software to your computer, you might want to take special care to research various external hard drives to ensure they’ll work as plug and play. Also, if a hard drive requires drivers in order to work properly, be sure the drivers are compatible with your computer’s operating system. Many external hard drives will work without installation of the included drivers, but some will not, so a little research can save you time and money in getting exactly what you want.

Overall, external hard drives are an excellent investment in data storage and protection, giving you an easy way to back up your computer and still maintain easy access to your data and files.

Everybody wants the best hard drives, but they are usually looking at cheap hard drives. You don’t have to spend tons of money to get a computer hard drive that you store tons of information on. A portable hard drive is definitely something you should think about if you are always on the go and need your information protected.

I have found that Western Digital is the King of cheap hard drives. They are not cheap because they are poorly built. They are one of the top competitors in the overall market as well. They definitely provide the best quality for the money. You could have these until your children start wondering why you are keeping a 20 year old computer. I still had computer hard drives from 15 years ago that still work. Yes, I did throw them away, but who likes throwing away working stuff?

At the retail store, you will be hard pressed to find cheap hard drives. It is more like a going out of business sale where they put the price back up to the regular price and then discount it from there. Making it still 30%&#43 more expensive than what you can get online. Retail store just can’t compete with the online world. All they can give is convenience. If you want to pay that extra 40-60 dollars for a hard drive and get it today. I will wait 2 days and save my 40-60 dollars. I think I will need a decent savings for the next couple of years!

Remember that Western Digital is the best option for cheap hard drives. Maxtor is in a close second and I am still using that myself because they a little better price for size. That is all up to you though. I can only show you the wave to the internet. You must surf through it. Good luck on your next purchase!

Hi all my name is Kerron, and basically I just wanted to share my opinion on why I think portable external hard drives are a very valuable device to have around. We all have massive amounts of data stored on our internal hard drives whether it’s PC or Mac, and if your like me, the thought of losing all my music collections, videos, photos and important software can be a terrifying experience.

Well I was fortunate (not really) to have one of those so called "Blue Screen Of Death" moments where apparently some sort of system file got corrupted, or so Windows said and for nothing it would boot into my profile. Needless to say, I have never done any sort of backing up in my life ( when I first heard the term "back up" I thought it to be a very difficult and tedious process that only people with technical knowledge could perform) which is why i never really bothered with the task.

Luckily for me I was able to take my PC to the local computer repair shop, and after a quick diagnostic ( like literally quick, the guy powered it on took one look at the error and said he’s gonna have to reformat my hard drive), he then asked if I had previously backed up my data at any point prior to the crash. I kept my cool, and with a calm, relaxed voiced I replied NO. After a very cheeky smile, he told me not to worry he would be able to retrieve my data and "back it up" to a portable external hard drive so he can restore it later. That term external hard drive had sparked my interest.

I was a bit curious to find out how it worked and was getting ready for some long tech jargon (that i would probably have to go look up after agreeing with what he said). Instead he brought out this little back box no bigger than the palm of my hand which isn’t very big, and explained all that all he needed to do was plug it into the USB port and after the windows recognises it automatically, it’s as easy as copy and pasting what ever type of data I like across to the external drive. Now the process to retrieve my data was a more complicated one (which I didn’t quite fully understand) so I won’t get into that. But I was sold on the idea of this little black box that is capable of holding my most valuable data, and the process of " back up" was as simple as copy and paste.

After getting my PC back up an working (big smile), I decided to invest in one of those portable external hard drive (there were also larger sized ones that you can place on your desk, but I like the idea of portable data) for keeping my data safe. I was actually surprised that it was not as expensive as I thought. I paid under $100 USD for my Seagate 250gb portable external hard drive, that was actually more storage space than my internal hard drive (kind of old PC). All I have to do is plug in the external drive into the USB port and it’s as simple as drag and drop my data. Now I rest comfortably knowing my most precious data is safe from unexpected system crashed, and the best of all what i really like about these portable external hard drives are the fact that you can take them with you anywhere and they only weight a few ounces, I’ve seen cell phones weigh more than them.

I highly recommend investing in a portable external hard drive if you have never backed up your data or need more storage space for backing up data, and also if you travel alot and need access to your personal data on the go. Feel free to visit my blog where I discuss certain factors to look at when purchasing a portable external hard drive.

What is a 1TB Hard Drive Good For?

Hard drives in the computer store data and let you get it back whenever you need.A 1TB hard drive is a special variation of this device, it lets you store 1 Terabytes of data, or 1000 gigabytes.

Hard drives have been using a magnetic principal to store data for the last few decades. It involves a metal disc coated in a layer that holds magnetic status set by the head hovering just a whisker above the surfaces.

These heads are able to determine the bits passing under them while the disks spin away at 4200, 5400 or 7200 rounds per minute in conventional hard disk. This bit is interpreted by internal electronics and then passed on to the motherboard where the operating system can catch it and finally find out what file it is and where it is supposed to go.

A terabyte is a measurement unit for data stored. This is 1000 Gigabytes or to make it more tangible, you would be able to store 220 one sided DVDs on a HDD this big. That’s the capacity of 125 8GB iPods, or equal to 225,000 good quality mp3 tracks. It is enough for most people to store all their albums, movies and documents at home. And if they ever run out of it, there are 1.5TB drives and another 1TB hard disk drive is not very expensive either.

There are two kinds of connectors you should be aware of when you choose a hard disk. The first and oldest connector is the PATA. You will be able to tell it, because it’s about 2 inches wide and has 80 wires running in it. It’s being phased out in favor of the SATA. The sate connector and cable is about the same as a USB connector and cable. It’s faster, more reliable and the controller electronics is more sophisticated. Most modern motherboards and hard disks come with this, if you have the connector, get SATA hard disk drives.

Sata hard disks are faster in data transfer and the manufacturing prices of cables are also lower for obvious reasons. A 80 copper wire cable requires more material while SATA only uses 7 wires.

A 1TB hard drive is slowly becoming factory standard for even OEM computers, it’s the new common capacity. If you’re after a new model because your old HDD died, or simply ran out of capacity, refer to forum threads and reviews before purchasing one. You are going to save yourself some frustration.

Why to Look for Disc Spanning When Choosing Your Home/Office Backup Software

Fifteen years ago, increasing numbers of people had computers, but their important data consisted of small documents and perhaps a few basic programs. To backup all they needed was several blank floppy discs and a compression utility. Even a "power user" might find themselves with two megabytes of data to preserve.

As we collect more and more important data, our backup needs are growing. Like in the past, we still have easily compressible documents, but bulky multimedia files as well, like videos, graphics and music. Doubtless this kind of data needs protection – the first pictures or a home video of a newborn baby might exist only as binary code on a hard drive. If your hard drive fails and there’s no backup – unlike with traditional film – those digital memories could be lost forever. Nowdays it’s common to find full system backups of hundreds of thousands files, ranging between 30 and 120 gigabytes (GB). The problem is where to store this data.

There are a number of media types available to most computer users for their backup purposes. Many businesses use magneto-optical or large-capacity tape drives for their daily and weekly backups. With very high capacities, these drives are technically impressive, but the media is usually very expensive. The common backup media for home and office includes CD/DVD discs, dedicated internal drives and external hard drives that exist in capacities over one terabyte (1TB) with fast Firewire 800 and USB 2.0 interfaces. Companies like Iomega found little home market success with smaller drives such as the Jaz (1-2GB) and Rev (35GB) series.

Where cost is a priority, a better option for home and small business users is often disc spanning, where cheap blank media can be used to the same effect as a tape or a dedicated drive. The benefits in cost of disc spanning are easily measurable. For a 20GB backup set the cost per gigabyte (CPG) will be as cheap as 33c for a DVD-RW disc, compared with up to $6 per gigabyte for an external hard drive of comparable size. Even for a larger backup of 250GB the optimal cost per gigabyte for external hard drive will be around 80 cents, still twice more than for a DVD-RW disc. A large internal drive can have a similar cost to a DVD-RW disc, but unless you make enough backup sets to fill it, your excess disk space is effectively wasted. In this sense, disc spanning is an attractive and economical option.

This table summarizes the cost per gigabyte for different types of storage media and various backup sets: http://www.softwaretalks.com/files/cpg.gif.

Moreover, disc spanning is simple. All you need is to choose the files, obtain some blank discs, and a good backup program will inform you of the total size, and how many media units are required for backup. Since a CD/DVD writing drive became a part of a basic PC configuration, you don’t need to fiddle around switching external devices, adding hard discs, installing drivers and playing other "hardware games". The ability to store your backups on discs offsite is also a major advantage.

Not only is disc spanning a cheap, simple and flexible backup method, but it is also one of the most reliable backup forms today. Modern optical storage media has a shelf life of at least 30 years and some manufacturers even offer 100 year guarantees. Compared to an average lifespan of 5-7 years for hard drives and up to 20 years for a magnetic tape, optical discs are very long-lived. Disc spanning makes it possible that our backups will outlive ourselves.

Finally, this backup method continues to gain popularity as technology develops. Next-generation forms of blue-laser discs using organic dyes, such as the Sony Blu-ray format (between 23GB and 54GB) and Toshiba’s HD-DVD, will further reduce the cost of removable media, meaning that inexpensive and simple backups are within the reach of everyone.
